About this talk

This sermon concludes a series on Ephesians 6 and the armour of God by focusing on prayer—not as a literal seventh piece of armour, but as the vital means by which believers stand firm while wearing the six pieces (belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, gospel-readiness shoes, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, and sword of the Spirit). Grammatically and theologically tied to “stand firm” in Ephesians 6:14–20, the call to prayer is summarised by praying “at all times, in all ways, for all believers.” Prayer must be constant and disciplined, like a habit as essential as eating, expressing our dependence on God’s strength rather than our own weakness. It must also be varied—covering every topic, length, and style, from short “popcorn prayers” to deep intercession, with no rigid formula required. Finally, believers are called to persistently pray for all the saints—local and global, persecuted and serving—following Paul’s example of requesting prayer not for easier circumstances but for boldness to proclaim the gospel. The sermon closes with an invitation for non-Christians to consider the relationship with God made possible through Christ, marked by this very access to Him in prayer.

Main points

  • Prayer is the means by which believers stand firm while wearing the armour of God.
  • Praying “at all times” means constant, disciplined prayer rooted in dependence on God.
  • Praying “in all ways” means variety in content, length, and style, with no single correct method.
  • Praying “for all believers” means interceding for the local church, other churches, the persecuted church, and missionaries.
  • True spiritual maturity, as modelled by Paul, involves asking others for more prayer, not less.
  • Paul’s prayer request centred on boldness to share the gospel, not on relief from hardship.
  • The gospel—human sinfulness, God’s grace, and salvation through Christ—remains the central concern of prayer and ministry.
